Hackers Target E-Shoe Store

Hackers have successfully infiltrated the online shoe store Zappos.com, putting more than 24 million of its customers at risk to have their names, credit card numbers, and other personal information at risk of being exploited by the hackers. To try to get ahead of the problem, Zappos.com has been out a warning to all of its customers advising them that their Web site has been compromised while urging them to change their user names and passwords for access to the site. Spokesmen for Zappos.com say that their actions are strictly precautionary and that there is no way that the hackers could gain access to their customer’s actual passwords because they are encoded and that the hackers would not be able or would not take the time to unlock the encryption for these passwords.

According to Zappos.com officials, the hackers didn’t get their hands on customers full credit card numbers or other payment data because the database that contains this information was not hacked. The infiltrators could only see the last four digits of the customer credit cards, which are almost as worthless as the last four digits of your social security card.

The attack on Zappos data happened through one of its servers in Kentucky and one of the internal networks of the company. There is an extensive investigation taking place to get to the bottom of the attack on Zappos and to come up with measures that will ensure that this cannot happen again in the future. Companies that do their business exclusively on the Web are even more vulnerable than traditional brick and mortar businesses to long term consequences to their customer base from a hacking incident, though it isn’t great for anyone.

My take:

I guess I still can’t figure out why a hacker would target a business like Zappos.com or any other like it. They must have thought that once they got into the database they would be able to get credit card information, and that perhaps Zappos wasn’t as secure with that as other online B to B’s. I’m happy to see that they are, or at least that’s what they are saying.

Americans Holding Cars Longer

Americans are holding onto their cars longer, with the average age of a car on the street now approximately 11 years old. This is the longest that Americans have held onto their old clunkers since 1995. The trend in holding onto your car longer follows on the back of the economic slow down experienced since 2007, which has most people putting off big ticket purchases like a new car while times are tough. But what is not so good for automobile dealers is good for service departments, mechanics, and after market parts suppliers, all of whom benefit when people hold onto their vehicles longer and therefor need to service these cars more often.

Independent auto service centers, your local mechanic, stand to benefit more than the service department at the dealerships because most older cars don’t have extended maintenance coverage so there is no real incentive for a car owner to go back to have his or her car repaired by the auto dealership, especially given that many have the perception that the cost of repairs is much higher at the dealership than your local mechanic. Industry analysts say that the number of cars still under warranty have declined to their lowest level in the last 12 to 15 years.  In an effort to capture some of the repair business that they are missing out on some dealerships are trying to lure customers into their repair bays by extending hours, offering lower prices on many parts, and to have repair specials on many common repair issues.

One of the reason for the older cars still on the road is the improved quality of the vehicles coming off the assembly line. With competition among the car makers worldwide continuing to be as fierce as ever, they have to make sure of the quality of the product or they will lose market share very quickly.

My take:

Its good to see that cars are lasting longer because it does speak to the better product now being offered by all of the auto makers. Unless you are very wealthy, there’s no reason that you shouldn’t be able to get at least 10 -15 years from your vehicle. And if you are wealthy, then you simply have better choices whether to keep an old car or buy a new one.

Cruise Ship Captain Still Behind Bars

The captain of the Italian luxury liner that ran aground over the weekend is still in jail according to Italian officials. The captain, Francesco Schettino, is facing charges that include manslaughter, shipwreck, and abandoning a ship when passengers were still on board. The ship, Costa Concordia, hit a bar close to shore over the weekend with 4200 passengers on the liner. So far eleven bodies have been recovered while everyone else got to shore with only some having minor injuries. Schettino has been with the Costa line since 2002 when he joined as a safety officer, and then a staff captain. He was made a full captain in 2006. A spokesperson for Costa said that Schettino was properly trained and that he has passed all required testing and that all of their captains and crew are constantly trained and monitored for compliance with all rules and procedures.

After being taken into custody by Italian authorities, Schettino is said to have given conflicting accounts of what happened to cause the ship to run aground as well as to what was going on in the minutes and hours following the crash. His first account of the accident has the captain stating that immediately after the crash we all abandoned ship while his later testimony to Italian Coast Guard officials states that he and others aboard were catapulted into the water on impact.  One Italian Coast Guard officer recalls having to scream at Schettino to get back on the ship and to let them know how many people are still on board and how many might have special needs, or just about any other information that might help to save lives and safely rescue everyone from the scene. He goes on to say that Schettino almost had to be forced to get back on the sinking ship to do his job, his duty as the captain of the ship.

Costa officials seem to be following the lead of the Italian Coast Guard in placing the blame for the crash and the botched rescue squarely at the feet of Schettino. One Costa official said that the captain ventured way off course and much too close to the shore. And, his actions at the scene of the accident violate every rule of the sea, especially the one best known to captain and layman alike, ‘the captain always goes down with the ship.’

My Take:

So much for the captain going down with the ship. It seems like after screwing up in the first place by beaching this huge ship onto a sand bar, the captain decided that it was every man for himself. He is facing some very stiff penalties if found guilty, which at this point he seems to be.

Mystery Illness Plagues Upstate Teens

Two dozen high school girls from the same school in upstate New York, LeRoy Junior-Senior High, have all come down with an illness that so far has doctors baffled. All of the girls describe waking up one day and displaying symptoms more commonly associated with Tourette’s Syndrome, such as uncontrollable body movements, tics and verbal outbursts. All of the girls are suffering to varying degrees with the symptoms of this illness but all of them, and their families are struggling with questions that so far the school and the medical community are unable to answer.

State officials have already ruled-out anything at the school itself that  might be the root cause for the illness. After being examined by doctors health officials have ruled out carbon monoxide, illegal drug use, and a variety of other straws that they are grabbing for in order to put their finger on what may have triggered the symptoms being displayed by the young Upstate New York girls. Parents of the girls aren’t buying it, at least not until they have seen the test results conducted at the school for themselves, which so far they haven’t.

Some of the girls have stated that their personal physicians have said that the onset of the symptoms was stress-related, but one girl, Jay Sanchez doesn’t believe this is the case. She says that one day she fell asleep and took a long nap and when she woke up she began to stutter uncontrollably and has been exhibiting advanced symptoms ever since. At this point, other experts believe that the problem could be psychological and have recommended that the girls see a therapist to try to find out what is behind this mysterious illness.

My take:

It’s hard to imagine that one day, your otherwise happy and healthy little girl could lie down for a nap, and when she wakes up her entire life is changed by an illness that no one can diagnose or tell you how or why it happened so suddenly. These poor girls and their families must be going through hell.

Citigroup Shares Fall on Earnings Report

Citigroup shares hit the skids today after earnings and profits for the banking giant fell more than industry analysts had expected. In addition, the dismantling of Citi Holdings, its mortgage servicing business, also weighed on share prices. It was reported that Citigroup’s income for Q4 2011 totaled $1.2billion, lower by 7.7% from a year earlier while revenues fell 6.5% from the same period in 2011 to $17.2 billion. Analysts were somewhat shocked by the report as most forecasters were were expecting profits of more than $18.5 billion, or about 49 cents per share.

One of the culprits underlying the disappointing revenues for Citigroup were trading and investment activities in the fourth quarter of 2011, which dropped by more than 29% compared to Q4 2010. A spokesman for Citigroup said that investor concern over the debt crisis in Europe was the reason for revenues in their bond trading area dropping by nearly 25% as the trading community fled this investment option fearing that the crisis would worsen and thereby undermine the value of their portfolios. Citi Holdings, a group of different banking businesses and none of them doing particularly well, also undercut earnings with revenues in this group falling 30% in the fourth quarter of 2011.

The moved to unwind and slim down Citi Holdings is part of a larger effort at CitiGroup to move away from a banking model that is more like a financial supermarket to one that is more trim, more specialized, and more able to react and adjust to changes in the financial markets and the underlying economic conditions that move these markets. In 2011 Citi Holdings saw its assets shrink by $90 billion to $269 billion. As soon as this group has been trimmed down further it will be incorporated into Citigroup’s core operations unit.

My take:

I’m not shedding any tears for CitiGroup not making as much money as expected, unless of course they take the typical action of laying-off employees rather than taking a pound of flesh from the managers that actually make the poor decisions that lead to the less than stellar earnings reports. In the long run, CitiGroup, and especially those that run it, will be fine. Its the rest of us that have to worry.

Teacher Loses 300lbs

Little more than five years ago Wendy McConkey weighed almost 450lbs. Needless to say that everything in her life was being stretched to the maximum with her health failing, depression, and all of the other consequences of being so overweight. She was afraid of the person that she was becoming, which from her perspective was a spectacle, a person you would read about in the news or featured on TV news stories around the country for having to be cut out of their home or some other unsavory story that often follows people that are morbidly obese.

So, Wendy made a decision and she stuck with it. That decision was to put an end to the life she was living and to go on a strict regime of diet and exercise, the result being that she has since lost 302lbs. Now instead of being a sideshow freak she has gained celebrity status with all of the expected American lifestyle magazines and TV shows asking for Wendy to be a guest or to have an exclusive article about her. Wendy said that so far she’s been contacted by People Magazine, Oprah, The Today Show, and The View, all clamoring for the chance to be the ones to tell her story and to show America that losing weight, no matter how much, can be done.

Ms. McConkey says that her journey back started with joining Weight Watchers and walking a little each day. Then she started walking a little more and a little more until she could actually handle strenuous exercise. She is a kindergarten teacher in Tacoma, Washington and the biggest change Wendy says is in her energy level and her ability to really keep up with the little tykes. Before she lost the weight, Wendy acknowledges that there were just some things that she couldn’t do with the kids because it was physically impossible. Now Wendy advises anyone that will listen that if there’s something that you need to do to change your life, just do it because the reward at the end is just so worth it.

My take:

Congratulations Wendy. That must have really taken all the fortitude in the world to stick with it, especially when you’re starting from a point where you could just as well given up and resided yourself to being so overweight that it effects your life. I hope that many others see and hear your story and realize that they can also alter their life, no matter how far they’ve let it slip away.

Quiet Equity Market Has Investors Confused

The U.S. equity market has been unusually quiet to start 2012. The first week of trading on the S&P 500 saw less than a 1% fluctuation in the value of the index, which has some investors wondering when will the next big move be coming, and more importantly, are we headed up or down?  The last time it was this quiet in the equity markets was in April of 2011 when the market also slogged along in a narrow trading range for 13 days. Investors are hoping that the breakout of this round of doldrums will be different than April because when prices broke back then, they broke considerably lower with the market falling for the next five months before establishing a base.

Some notables in an otherwise mundane market finds that the DVD giant Neflix is making its way back with the share prices up 36% to start the year. Bank of America is also a standout so far with investors warming to the banking behemoth and taking the stock price higher by 19%. On the other hand, utilities aren’t finding much love with investors after being the leading the market to close 2011. The market has risen by some 17% from its lows in 2011, despite analysts not seeing much growth in profits from the companies comprising the S&P 500 index. Analysts have moved the estimates for profits in 2011 down by 19%, hardly the type of information that would fuel a market rally. Another reason for the lethargy in the markets is that overall trading volume is also lower to start the year. On a typical day on the New York Stock Exchange traders will move approximately 4.3 billion shares. So far in 2012, the volume on the NYSE is just about 3.9 billion shares per day.

Given the less than stellar performance of profits at the companies making up the S&P, analysts are also concerned that the rise seen since the lows, and maintained so far this year could very well just be the “January Effect” and that once it is over, equity prices could head lower. The January Effect describes the process whereby investors sell shares prior to the new year to lock-in losses for tax purposes, only to come back into the market in January to buy those shares back again.

My take:

I think we really have to look at the lack of volatility in the market as the quiet before the storm. And that considering the market seems to have reached these levels on little more than thin air, I’m afraid that we’re due for a correction lower into the end of Q1.

Retailers Cautiously Confident

2011 wasn’t a banner year for the nation’s retailers, but it wasn’t terrible either. And that’s a good thing because 2012 will look pretty much the same. There’s a chance that sales will be stronger in 2012 but a lot will depend on the job market, which still remains the fly in the ointment for so many sectors of the economy. Shoppers were spending in 2011 at a moderate pace until the holiday season, at which time they seemed to be more willing to buy as long as the sellers were willing to offer deep discounts long into the season, not just on Black Friday. Industry analysts find that consumers are doing a good job consuming considering that so many of them are either unemployed or underemployed and that nowhere are there signs of a deflationary spiral lower where shoppers are putting off purchases entirely.

The National Retail Federation expects that retail sales in the U.S. will grow by 3.4% in 2012, which would be slightly lower than the 4.7% rise seen in 2011. However, it should be noted that the sales increase in 2011 followed on the back of two horrendous years in 2009 and 2010. Other industry watchers, such as ShopperTrak, are expecting sales to grow at the same pace as 2011 based on surveys that they have conducted nationwide. Custom Growth Partners, another retail market watcher, expects even better sales data for 2012 with their projections coming in at 5% – 6% growth for 2012.

E-commerce sales are also expected to increase, though to some extent, this could sap momentum from actual store sales as consumers shift to buying more products online. Analysts expect e-commerce sales to rise by more than 15% in 2012. Still the biggest factor underlying virtually every area of economic growth is the job market. The data for December were encouraging with the overall unemployment rate falling to 8.5% while new jobs created for the month increased by 200,000. My take:

There’s no way to underestimate the value of the consumer in the U.S. economy so seeing that sales picked-up in 2011 and that they are expected to grow at the same pace or perhaps better gives some hope that the economy will pick up steam also. But as noted above, the wild card will be the jobs market and how quickly we can get more people back working. Then we’ll see spending increase to levels where there aren’t closed retailers lining strip malls across the country.
